how to get Civitai API key
How to Get a Civitai API Key (and When You Need One)
A Civitai API key identifies your requests to Civitai without sharing your password. Browsing models on klopaper needs no key of your own — this guide covers when a personal key is worth creating.
- 01 01 · Account Sign in to Civitai
- 02 02 · Key Generate it once
- 03 03 · Use it Scripts and gated files
Create or sign in to your Civitai account
Open Civitai and create an account if you do not already have one. An account is required because every API key belongs to a specific Civitai user.
After signing in, open the Account page. Look for the API Keys section. Civitai may update the surrounding account layout, but the API key controls remain on this page.
- 1Open civitai.com and sign in or register.
- 2Go to your Account page.
- 3Find API Keys and choose Add API key.
Generate and copy the API key
Give the key a recognizable name such as “klopaper”. Review any permissions Civitai shows, then generate the key. Copy the value immediately and treat it like a password.
Do not paste the key into chat, screenshots, public issue reports, or recipe text. If it is exposed, delete it in Civitai and create a replacement.
Note: An API key authenticates API requests. It does not replace Buzz or other charges Civitai may show for generation and training.
Do you need a Civitai key for klopaper?
No. klopaper authenticates to Civitai with its own server-side token, so browsing models and LoRAs works without pasting a key anywhere. There is no Civitai key panel to fill in.
A personal key is still worth creating for your own use of the Civitai API — scripts, bulk downloads, or gated content on civitai.com. Manage and revoke it from your Civitai account settings.
- 1Open Models in klopaper and search — no key required.
- 2Create a personal Civitai key only for your own API use.
- 3Revoke it from your Civitai account whenever you like.
What “Image search is temporarily overloaded” actually means
This message comes from Civitai itself, not from klopaper: their image search backend is at capacity and rejected the query. An API key does not change it, because the error is about their capacity rather than your identity.
Civitai also serves that response through a CDN that caches it for about five minutes and ignores the request’s API key, so the same search can keep failing for everyone in that window. klopaper retries automatically under a different cache key; if it still fails, wait a moment or change the filters — a different tag, sort, or period searches a different slice.
- 401 or unauthorized: the key is missing, invalid, revoked, or lacks access — this one a key does fix.
- 429 or overloaded: Civitai is rate-limiting or saturated. Slow down, retry, or vary the filters.
- No gated results: sign in on Civitai and confirm your account can view that resource.
Questions
Civitai FAQ
Is a Civitai API key the same as my password?
No. It is a separate token for API access. Never enter your Civitai password anywhere but civitai.com.
Can I revoke the key later?
Yes. Delete it from the API Keys section of your Civitai account. Nothing needs changing in klopaper, which never held your key.
Why does image search work without a key sometimes?
Some public endpoints allow anonymous access. A key identifies your requests and is more reliable when anonymous traffic is limited.
