how to get Civitai API key
How to Get a Civitai API Key and Add It to Klopaper
A Civitai API key identifies your requests to Civitai. In Klopaper it unlocks more reliable image search, gated LoRAs, and your Civitai collections without sharing your Civitai password.
- 01 01 · Account Sign in to Civitai
- 02 02 · Key Generate it once
- 03 03 · Klopaper Save and test
Create or sign in to your Civitai account
Open Civitai and create an account if you do not already have one. An account is required because every API key belongs to a specific Civitai user.
After signing in, open the Account page. Look for the API Keys section. Civitai may update the surrounding account layout, but the API key controls remain on this page.
- 1Open civitai.com and sign in or register.
- 2Go to your Account page.
- 3Find API Keys and choose Add API key.
Generate and copy the API key
Give the key a recognizable name such as “Klopaper”. Review any permissions Civitai shows, then generate the key. Copy the value immediately and treat it like a password.
Do not paste the key into chat, screenshots, public issue reports, or recipe text. If it is exposed, delete it in Civitai and create a replacement.
Note: An API key authenticates API requests. It does not replace Buzz or other charges Civitai may show for generation and training.
Add the Civitai API key to Klopaper
Open Klopaper Settings and find the Civitai API key panel. Paste the key, save it, then use Test. A valid result confirms that Klopaper can authenticate to Civitai.
Klopaper encrypts the key at rest and scopes it to the anonymous session in this browser. Deleting site cookies can disconnect that session, so keep the original key manageable from your Civitai account.
- 1Open Settings in Klopaper.
- 2Paste the key into the Civitai API key field and save.
- 3Select Test and return to Explore.
Fix “Image search is temporarily overloaded”
This message can appear when anonymous Civitai image search is overloaded. Add a valid Civitai API key so Klopaper sends authenticated requests, then retry the search.
If the error remains, test the key in Settings, remove and recreate an invalid key, check Civitai service availability, and retry after a short pause. Authentication avoids anonymous limits but cannot prevent a full upstream outage.
- 401 or unauthorized: the key is missing, invalid, revoked, or lacks access.
- 429 or overloaded: slow down requests and use an authenticated key.
- No gated results: sign in on Civitai and confirm your account can view that resource.
Questions
Civitai FAQ
Is a Civitai API key the same as my password?
No. It is a separate token for API access. Never enter your Civitai password in Klopaper.
Can I revoke the key later?
Yes. Delete it from the API Keys section of your Civitai account, then remove it from Klopaper Settings.
Why does image search work without a key sometimes?
Some public endpoints allow anonymous access. A key identifies your requests and is more reliable when anonymous traffic is limited.
